DIY cargo bike
Version I:
Main Idea
This project was heavily inspired by the Omnium Minimax and the Ten07, both of which share a similar design. I discovered these influences after deciding to build from an all-road bike frame because of its durable steel construction. To enhance the frame, I added a 5mm diameter, 2mm thick round tube.
The front headtube and fork were sourced from a 20-inch BMX bike. These components were then welded together to form the main structure. Due to the design, I opted for an older friction shifter that allowed for maintenance ease and eliminated the need for a shifting cable along the diagonal tube.
Illustrations highlight key aspects of the assembly: green circles indicate detailed zoom-ins, blue for welding points, and red shows newly added parts. The steering angle of the front wheel is critical, needing to be between 70° to 72°.
A small piece of metal was welded and drilled into the round tube to attach a flat carrying surface. I used paracord to secure a square frame constructed of tubes and fastened by nuts and bolts to the welded parts.
Steering was achieved using a ball joint with an 8mm female thread from Amazon, reinforced by inserting an 8mm rod into a 10mm rod for stability.
To make it easier to cut, round tubes have a welding line. It can greatly help get the holes aligned (the steering and 20” wheel ones), 3D printing jigs like these can help, it also helps get the bottom hole at the right place (since I couldn’t drill at an angle I had to make a bigger hole that was a bit translated in my case 17.5 mm).
Areas for Improvement
- Consider purchasing a head tube extension instead of handmaking one.
- Experiment with a 4mm horizontal bar.
- Use a proper head tube for the small wheel, rather than modifying a 20” BMX part.
- It would be better to weld the lower steering bar of the handlebar directly to the base of the cut fork.
Future Enhancements
- Plan a professional paint job via RAL 6005.
- Replace the steering headset, with a newer better one.
- Add small equipment such as lights and a bell.
- Consider integrating or crafting a steering stabilizer like the one from Beasty Bike.
- Make the welds stronger and fill all the small holes
- Print caps for the tubes (25mm and 50 mm) Special thanks to LOV for their support and providing a space to work on this project. Their help was invaluable in refining the design. Let the carrying commence!
Version II:
A second version closer to the Omnium Moni and heavily inspired by this build is currently in the making. Inspiration: YouTube Video
This version will be simpler since there is no offset direction.
I used tubing from biketubing.com
I will update soon on the progress.
