DIY Split Mechanical Keyboard Guide
Custom Split Mechanical Keyboard Build
I decided to create a custom keyboard to have a purpose-built tool as my main device.
Ordering the Kit
I ordered the Lily58 kit from splitkb.com. The kit included:
- PCB plates
- Two microcontrollers
- A cable
- Diodes, resistors, and connectors
In the same order, I also added:
- Switches 25g, but they were too weak, so I ordered 35g ones later
- Hot swappable sockets (added in the second order, as the first batch was too weak)
Important Note: Don’t forget to mirror the case for both sides.
3D Printing the Case
The case was 3D printed and took around 200g of filament, accounting for some incorrectly printed parts.
Key Things to Remember
- Choco and MX switches are not the same.
- 35g switches might be too weak.
- Diodes are soldered on one side only (to allow cutting them flush on the other side where the ICs were soldered).
Caution: Pay special attention to how you solder the IC and diodes!
